Divorce can be confusing, but it is important to know that you have rights to keep you safe and make sure your feelings are considered. This page is here to explain those rights in a way that is easy to understand. We want to make sure you know that your safety and emotions are very important and there are people and resources available to help you through this time.

Know Your Rights

I have the right to be told that my mother and my father will always love me.

2.

I have the right to be told that my parents’ decision to live apart is not my fault.

3.

I have the right to be seen as a human being, not a piece of property to be fought for or bargained over.

4.

I have the right to have decisions about me based on what is in my best interest and not on my parents’ hurt feelings or needs.

5.

I have the right to love both my father and my mother without being forces to choose or feeling guilty.

6.

I have the right to know both my mother and my father through regular and frequent involvement in my life.

7.

I have the right to have the financial support of both my mother and my father.

8.

I have the right to be spared from hearing hurtful or negative comments about either of my parents.

9.

I have the right to be a child and not be asked to lie, spy, or send messages between my parents.

10.

I have the right to be allowed to have affection for new people who come into my life without feeling guilty or being pressured.
